Troubleshooting and Errors
Login Issues
If you are experiencing issues logging into Jabber, please try the following:
- Make sure your phone number, or your department's main number, is entered in Banner. Review the following article for instructions on updating/adding a phone number in Banner: KB0010496
Note: If you are entering your phone number for the first time in Banner, you will not be able to log into Jabber until the following day.
- When logging into Jabber client for the first time use your full Rowan University email address (including the @rowan.edu for the username), enter your network password, and click onSign In.
- If you recently changed your network password please make sure you are using the updated password. If you need to verify or change your password please visit https://id.rowan.edu/
If you are still having issues logging in to Jabber after taking these steps, please call the Technology Support Center at 856-256-4400 or log onto support.rowan.edu to open a ServiceNow ticket to verify your account settings.
Cannot Verify Your Account error on Mac
What do I do about the error message "Cannot Verify Your account. Check your username and password" on my Mac?
Double click on the error message above. You may see the following:
- If you do have a Webex account, click onOpen Accounts and follow the instructions to integrate Jabber with Webex.
- If you do not have a Webex account, please contact the Technology Support Center 856-256-4400 or log in to support.rowan.edu and click Get Help, and we will help you resolve this error.
Connection to Phone Service Failed Error
Windows
To address the red x on the phone controls , and you are not using phone services, follow the steps below.
- Click on the phone controls icon
- SelectDisable phone services
- The phone controls icon will be changed to:
Mac
To address the "Connection to Phone Service failed" error message, and you are not using phone services, follow the steps below.
- Click on the phone controls icon
- SelectDisable Phone Services
- The error message will disappear:
- On the Jabber Application menu chooseJabber then clickQuit Jabber
- Launch Jabber again
- The phone controls icon will be changed to:
Check Network Connectivity
You can use Jabber anywhere you have an internet connection, though you may have connection issues or lose connectivity when moving between wireless access points. This mostly happens when using the phone capabilities. Follow these instructions to check the connection status on a Windows or Mac computer.
- Check Connection Status:
- Windows:Click on the Settings icon in theJabber hub window and then c hoose Help and Show connection status .
- Mac:On the Jabber Application menu, choose Help then Show Connection Status
- Status messages:
- Connected: Feature is enabled and connected properly.
- Connecting: Feature is making a connection attempt.
- Disconnected: Feature is enabled but is not connected. You may not be connected to the network, or a server may be down.
- Error: Feature is not currently enabled or connected. You may have entered an incorrect password. Try logging off and logging in again.
- Unknown: Feature status is unknown. Contact the Technology Support Center at 856-256-4400 or log onto support.rowan.edu to open a ServiceNow ticket to verify your account settings.
Reset software
Resetting the Cisco Jabber client can be used for troubleshooting or setting the software back to the default settings.
Note: This will cause the client to completely reset to the original defaults. You will need to go through the complete client configuration again. In addition, this will clear all the data (including recent chats/history, preferences, usernames and account settings that were not provisioned automatically), but their persistent chat group transcripts will be retained as these are never deleted.
Reset Windows and Mac client
- Launch Cisco Jabber.
- Sign out of Jabber (if logged in):
- Windows: Click on thenSign out
- Mac: On the Jabber Application menu chooseJabber then S ign Out
- C lick on theReset Jabber link.
- The 'Are you sure you want to reset Cisco Jabber?' message appears.
- Click on theReset button.Enter Username and Password.
- Click onSign In. .
Contacts
Windows
Importing your contacts into Jabber for Windows makes it easier to collaborate and stay in touch with people who are important to you. You may upload up to 500 contacts in .xml, .csv, or .vcf formats.
- You can export your contacts from Outlook or RIMS.
- From the Jabber hub window, open Settings (gear icon), then chooseFile >Import contacts...
- Select the import file and clickOpen
- NOTE: If you are importing your RIMS Jabber contact list from your Organization Information, you may receive this error message:
- The above message is generated from attempting to import yourself as a contact (which is part of the contact list). This error can be ignored.
- NOTE: If you are importing your RIMS Jabber contact list from your Organization Information, you may receive this error message:
Mac
You can allow Cisco Jabber to search for people from your Mac contacts list so you'll be able to contact them easily directly from Jabber. When you search for someone in Jabber, the search results includes people from your Mac contacts list. If you receive a call from a local contact, Jabber matches that number to people in your Mac contact list
- On the Jabber Application menu choose Jabber> Preferences.
- Click on theGeneral tab.
- In the Contacts section, selectIntegrate local Mac Contacts with your Cisco Jabber contacts.
- Restart your client to see the contacts.

You can also request help with importing groups of contacts for a single user or group of users. You will need a list of usernames and names of groups in CSV or Excel format. Email support@rowan.edu for more information.
How do I block contacts in Jabber?
Note: When you block people, they can't see your availability status or send you instant messages, even if you're on their contact list.
There are two methods to blocking contacts in Jabber:
- Blocking everyone (unless they are in your contact list)
- Blocking individual contacts
Blocking everyone (unless they are in your contact list)
Jabber for Windows:
- Click on the (settings) icon in the Jabber hub window, and go toOptions.
- TheOptions window opens. ChoosePrivacy from the left-hand pane.
- UnderInside my domain (rowan.edu) chooseBlock everyone.
- This will block all Rowan contacts that are not in your contact list. See adding contacts for more information.
Jabber for Mac:
- On the Jabber Application menu chooseJabber >Preferences.
- TheGeneral Preferences window opens. ChoosePrivacy from the top pane.
- Next toFor people in my company change the drop down selection fromAutomatically accept requests toBlock requests
- This will block all Rowan contacts that are not in your contact list. See adding contacts for more information.
Blocking individual contacts
Jabber for Windows:
- From the hub window, open the Settings menu, and go toOptions.
- TheOptions window opens. ChoosePrivacy from the left-hand pane.
- SelectAdvanced
- Click on the+ button and enter specific contact addresses (i.e. rothwr@rowan.edu)
- SelectApply thenOK
Jabber for Mac:
- On the Jabber Application menu chooseJabber >Preferences.
- TheGeneral Preferences window opens. ChoosePrivacy from the top pane.
- Next toBlock specific people: click onManage Blocked People
- Click on the +button and enter specific contact addresses (i.e. rothwr@rowan.edu)
- Click Doneand close the Privacy Preferences window
Create a Persistent Group Chat Room
Persistent chat rooms are different from group chats in that they are logged onto the server, meaning these types of chats are saved and you can log in to the chat room at any time and see past conversations. You can create your own persistent group chat room or request one be created for you.
Create a Persistent Group Chat Room
- Click the Rooms icon in the Jabber hub.
- Click onAll rooms
- Click onNew room
- Fill out the requested information to set up the room:
- Enter a name for the room
- Enter a description for the room
- Under "Type," choosePublic if you want any Jabber user to be able to join orRestricted if you want users to have to request access
- Location should be set to Automatically select. Do not change the location.
- Select the check box next to "Add to 'My rooms'" to add the chat to your list of rooms
- By default if you create the room you are the moderator. To add other moderators, search the directory and add additional moderators.
- Click onCreate to create the room
- When prompted to add members, click onAdd now
- Search the directory and add everyone that you want to be a member of the group.
- ClickSave
Request a Persistent Chat Room
- Log in to https://support.rowan.edu
- Open a request that includes the following information:
- Name of your department
- Name requested for the persistent chat room
- Will the persistent group chat room be public (open to all Jabber users) or will it be restricted to certain Jabber users?
- If the persistent chat room is restricted please state the name(s) and network user name(s) of who the moderator(s) should be. Moderators are responsible for maintaining group membership and adding other moderators.
- Include a list of who should be members of this group.

Screen Captures
To take screen captures with your keyboard, do the following:
- Use theTab key to navigate to theSend a screen capture control on theConversations window.
- Tap theSpace bar.
- Hold down theSpace bar and use the arrow keys to highlight the region of the screen you want to capture.
- Release theSpace bar to take the screen capture and paste it into your chat window.
- PressEnter to send the screen capture.

Setting Up Webex Integration
- Click on the settings icon and chooseFile and thenOptions.
- ChooseMeetings from left-hand pane and click onSet up Account....
- Enter rowan.webex.com for the Webex site. Enter your Webex username and password and clickOK .
Start an Instant Meeting (Meet Now)
Note: Make sure that "Use Personal Room for all my instant meetings" is selected in your "Meet Now" Settings on Cisco Webex before starting an instant meeting.
There are two ways to start an instant meeting:
- Select one or more contacts and then r ight-click and selectMeet Now. You will be connected into your personal room and your participants will be sent an invitation to join your meeting.

Locations
You can set up Cisco Jabber to show what location you're working from. After you add a location, Cisco Jabber automatically recognizes where you are and updates your location anytime you are at that location.

- Click the Settings icon in the top right corner of the Jabber hub menu.
- ClickOptions….

- Check (or uncheck) the option forEnable locations depending on your preference (Optional)
- SelectTell me when new locations are detected, which will alert when Jabber automatically detects a new location.
- Add a Location
- Click theCreate new location name button.
- SelectShare this location, if you want your contacts to see your location.
- In the Name and Address fields, enter information about your location.
- Click onCreate.
- Edit a location
- In theMy Locations window, select a location from the list and select the pen or edit icon to edit your location details.
- Update your location information and selectSave.
- Remove a location
- In theMy Locations window, select a location from the list that you want to remove
- Click on the X icon. The location is removed from the list.
- Reassign a Location
- In theMy Locations window, select a location from the list that you want to remove
- Click on the X icon. The location is removed from the list.

Set Location with Location Update Prompt
- IfTell me when new locations are detected is enabled in the options window, you will be prompted with aNew location detected prompt.
- On the Location update prompt, click onAdd to my locations.
- Click on theCreate new location name button.
- Type aNameand Address for the location.
- Click onCreate.
Update Your Location from the Jabber Hub
You can also set your location status to Shared or Hidden directly from the hub by clicking thePin icon as shown in the image below.

Add a New User to an Existing Jabber Chat Room
This process can only be completed by the person that is the administrator of the Jabber Chat Room
- Search the directory for the name of the person to add
- Click Save
- Repeat search for any additional users to add
- Click Save on the bottom of the screen to add all name(s) to the Jabber Chat Room
Delete a User from an Existing Chat Room
This process can only be completed by the person that is the administrator of the Jabber Chat Room
- Click the small 'i' that is located to the right of the name of the Jabber Chat Room
- Click the + sign next to theMembers heading
- Locate the person you need to delete
- Click the delete user icon
- Click Saveon the bottom of the page

Automatically Start After Logging In
To have Jabber automatically start after logging in to your computer, follow the instructions for your operating system: Windows or Mac.
Windows
- Click on the gear (settings) icon in the Jabber hub windows and click Options.
- Select the "Start Cisco Jabber when my computer starts" option, then click OK.
Mac
- On the Jabber Application menu choose Jabber, then Preferences.
- On the General tab select the "Start Cisco Jabber when my computer starts" option
Your Title in Jabber
The title that appears on the the My Profile features pulls from RIMS. If your title is not listed correctly in Jabber, it must be updated in RIMS.
